Rather than bringing back actor James Alexandrou, producers have - with the actor's permission - recast the role.
Martin returns to 'EastEnders'
While Sonia has been back on the Square for quite some time, her husband hasn't appeared in Walford but now, with James Bye in the role, Martin is back.
However, sadly Martin's return to Walford isn't exactly a happy one and the first thing Sonia and Martin do is sit down to discuss their marriage problems.
James has previously shared his excitement at joining the cast, stating: "It's a huge opportunity for me to put my own stamp on an iconic character and I can't wait to get started."
While the Fowlers' problems rumble on, elsewhere in Walford the Lucy Beale murder case is developing and the investigation is set to be rocked by two shock twists.
The murderer's identity will finally be revealed in February, during a special live episode.
