Last year, the hunt to find the best modern Christmas cracker joke was won by the one-liner 'What does Miley Cyrus have at Christmas? Twerky'.

And in 2014, pop stars have topped the poll again. The quip 'What will be missing from Take That's Christmas stocking this year? An Orange' has been voted the winner in this year's competition, which is run by TV comedy channel Gold.

Both comedians and amateur wits submitted jokes to the contest, with over 2,000 Brits voting for their favourite from a shortlist of 10.

"This year's top 10 confirmed what I always suspected - that there are comedians everywhere," said comedy critic Bruce Dessau. "The entrants came up with quips that were cheeky, smart and snappy, the perfect combination for the perfect Christmas cracker joke."

Check out the 10 shortlisted jokes below. The witticisms that just missed out on the top spots included 'Why were Santa's helpers in hiding this year? Their naked Elfies were leaked', 'Why won't Santa leave Chris and Gwyneth with his reindeer and sleigh? In case they consciously uncouple' and 'What girl band sells the cheapest variety of Christmas food? Lidl Mix'.
