Show bosses are pulling out all the stops to make sure next year’s celebrations make a splash with viewers, including a planned live episode - which will finally reveal who was behind Lucy Beale’s grisly murder - and the return of Barbara Windsor as Peggy Mitchell.

However, now that producers have got Babs on board, they’re keen to get members of her soap family back in Walford too, and TV hard man Ross, who played Grant Mitchell for nine years, before leaving in 1999, is top of their list.

“He would love nothing more than to bring Peggy back to Albert Square with both her boys. It would be a huge moment in ‘EastEnders’ history.

“Talks are still ongoing but everyone is hopeful. If anyone can pull it off Dom can.”

Adding fuel to the fire, a spokesperson for ‘EastEnders’ has refused to confirm or deny Ross’s involvement, saying: “We are not going to comment on any speculation regarding the plans for our 30th anniversary at this stage.

"All we will say is that it will be a week that ‘EastEnders’ viewers will not want to miss.”

Since his last appearance in Albert Square in 2006, Ross has carved a new career for himself, making acclaimed investigative documentaries, such as ‘Ross on Gangs’ and ‘Ross Kemp in Afghanistan’.
