The chart-topping singer will make her debut as a coach on ‘The Voice’ this weekend - taking over from Kylie Minogue, who left at the end of the third series - and she's now stated that she took the job because she has a lot of “respect” for the show.

“People are so fixated on numbers and having a Christmas number one. I respected the format of ‘The Voice’ and how I musically connected to it.”

However, Simon Cowell has previously criticised Rita for choosing ‘The Voice’ over ‘X Factor’, which last year welcomed Mel B to its judging panel, alongside returning star Cheryl Fernandez-Versini.

He told the Daily Star last month: “I was surprised Rita chose ‘The Voice’ and not ‘X Factor’. She made the wrong decision.

“As things happen, things have worked out fine. Mel B has been better than she would have been anyway.”

‘The Voice’ returns for its fourth season on Saturday night, with Sir Tom Jones, will.i.am and Ricky Wilson all returning as coaches.
