'Broadchurch's return has gone down a storm with viewers. The first episode of Series 2 last night was the subject of a staggering 14,000 tweets - not bad for a weeknight drama!

Of this huge number, an impressive 75% were positive in reaction, with key words including a whole load of 'HOOKED' and 'AMAZING'.

Millions tuned in last night to see the return of detectives Hardy and Miller to the devastated coastal community, with writer Chris Chibnall delivering the first of many promised twists straight away - Danny Latimer's charged murderer Joe Latimer standing up in the courtroom and changing his plea to 'Not Guilty', to the distress and shock of the Latimer family, as well as his own wife DS Miller.

'Broadchurch' is back - with faces both new and familiar

In this box set age, many fans across social media pointed out they didn't know how they would cope having to wait a whole week between episodes. For example...

The new arrivals on the show - lawyers Marianne Jean-Baptiste and Charlotte Rampling were singled out for much praise…

… particularly the latter with her cool gaze and enduring air of mystery…

Our favourites were not forgotten, though, with many praising the exceptional acting of both David Tennant and Olivia Colman, who won a BAFTA for her work in the first series.

So, all in all, a very welcome return to screen for this most hypnotic of shows. And, for some viewers, it looks like it's going to be a long eight weeks…
