Moment 1: 'Capitain Phillips'

Tom Hanks is one of only two actors to win consecutive Oscars for his roles in Philadelphia and Forrest Gump and 2013 saw another phenomenal performance from the Big star. Directed by Paul Greengrass, Hanks gives an outstanding portrayal in the title role of Captain Phillips, telling of the real life hijacking of a cargo ship in the Indian Ocean. Despite, Hanks’ providing so many powerful and emotional moments, the Californian born actor didn’t even get a nomination for his performance.

Moment 2: 'Fruitvale Station'

In the early hours of New Years Day 2009, 22 year old father Oscar Grant III was shot dead by a police officer in controversial circumstances that sparked protests and even rioting. Fruitvale Station follows Grant, played brilliantly by Michael B Jordan, over the 24 hours before the shooting, showing the normality of his life as a father, a son and boyfriend. Simply told but incredibly powerful this was a film undoubtedly overlooked in awards season.

Moment 3: 'Saving Mr Banks'

It’s very hard not to like Emma Thompson but she expertly brings to life the stern and often rude, Mary Poppins author, P.L Travers in the charming Saving Mr Banks. The film, also starring Tom Hanks as Walt Disney, explores the struggle of translating Mary Poppins from page to screen. Thompson portrays the instantly dislikeable Brit, who at first can’t take to the American way. Nonetheless, come the end of the film her performance will have you weeping as she watches her beloved creation finally come to the big screen.

Moment 4: 'Inside Llewyn Davis'

The Coen brothers have brought audiences Marge Gunderson in Fargo the Dude in The Big Lebowski and now we have Llewyn in the melancholic but brilliant Inside Llewyn Davis. An incredible soundtrack accompanies Llewyn as we watch his struggle to make it from the clubs of New York’s Greenwich Village to a successful recording artist. Lead by Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Oscar Issac and a supporting cast that includes Justin Timberlake, Carey Mulligan and John Goodman, this film was certainly overlooked at last years Oscars.
