How Are McDonald's French Fries Made? Even Grant Imahara Was A Bit Shocked

19 Ingredients Make McDonald's French Fries

Have you ever heard rumours claiming McDonald's chips don't have any potato in them?

Those myths are wrong, and McDonald's has released another video in its "Our Food, Your Questions" series to show exactly what goes into its famous fries.

Former Mythbuster Grant Imahara has been pleasantly surprised so far in the series by how 'real' McDonald's food is, previously witnessing full cuts of chicken going into the McNuggets and very little matter other than pork making up the McRib.

But this time, he didn't look so pleased.

"These look like potatoes, but are they really potatoes?" he asks at one point. *Awkward silence*

The latest video from the fast food giant also appears to show Imahara's awkward displeasure at seeing the uncooked fries going through an "ingredient dip" full of scary sounding chemicals.

Mmm, delicious anti-foaming agent

Attempting to tackle rumours of 17 ingredients making up the iconic chips, Imahara actually found 19 ingredients (even though a few are repeated, so technically it's less than that).

The weird bits that make up McDonald's french fries include dimethylpolysiloxane, sodium acid pyrophosphate, hydrolysed wheat and TBHQ.

Thankfully, at the end our brave hero finds actual potatoes. We can all breathe a sigh of relief, because it's honest-to-god real actual potatoes that a being dredged through that "ingredient dip".

Unlike with other features in the series, this time the global chain felt the need to make a second video to clear up any odd feelings left behind by the production process.

Unsurprisingly, the majority of the ingredients on the list were preservatives and oils. Despite all the scary looking stuff that goes into them, McDonald's french fries are actually made from solid pieces of potato.

It's not mushed up gunk shaped into fries, and it's not solid starch. It's not any of the myths you hear around the pub. It's potato, fired through a grid at 70mph, dipped in chemicals and partially fried before being shipped to chains for more frying.
