Sam Smith To Pay Tom Petty Royalties Following ‘Stay With Me', ‘I Won't Back Down' Similarities Admission (VIDEO)

This '80s Singer Is Set To Make A Bunch Of Cash (Thanks To Sam Smith)

Tom Petty will now be given a writing credit on Sam Smith’s track ‘Stay With Me’, thanks to the song’s similarities to his hit ‘I Won’t Back Down’.

The publishers of Tom’s track contacted Sam’s to discuss similarities between the songs, reports the BBC.

Now, a spokesman for Sam has stated that Tom will be given a writing credit, while also adding that the similarities are “a complete coincidence".

"Not previously familiar with the 1989 Petty/Lynne song, the writers of 'Stay With Me' listened to ‘I Won't Back Down’ and acknowledged the similarity,” the statement reads. "Although the likeness was a complete coincidence, all involved came to an immediate and amicable agreement."

It hasn’t exactly been an easy month for Sam, after he was rumoured to have recently ended his relationship, just weeks after it began.

Things look likely to pick up though, as Sam is in the lead when it comes to Brit Award nominations.

He’ll go up against Ed Sheeran and a number of other British stars in the race for the gongs next month.
