iTunes Suffers Major Outage

iTunes Just Had Its Largest Outage In Months

If you own an Apple device you might have had some trouble downloading anything from iTunes on the 11 March.

Well you weren't alone, iTunes was reportedly suffering from intermittent outages throughout much of the day in the US, UK and Spain.

Why? In a statement to CNBC, Apple reports that the problem was an internal DNS error.

"We apologize to our customers experiencing problems with iTunes and other services this morning. The cause was an internal DNS error at Apple. We're working to make all of the services available to customers as soon as possible, and we thank everyone for their patience."

Domain Name System or DNS is the primary 'directory' for the internet and its websites, it assigns domains to IP addresses which in turn allow us to access specific pages or sections of the internet.

It appears as though the error only affected the actual purchasing process so while you were able browse through iTunes, the act of purchasing would show an error.

It's incredibly rare for Apple's services to suffer from an outage, indeed the last major issue was back in 2014 when Apple first unveiled HealthKit.

It transpired that the service had a number of bugs which resulted in Apple actually shutting down HealthKit's functionality temporarily while the problem was fixed.
