WiFi Visualised In 3D Is An 'Alien World'

WiFi is literally everywhere, or is it? Dominique Thiebaut, a computer science professor from Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts has discovered that WiFi, when visualised is an alien world of ebbs and flows.

Initially Thiebaut used a simple LED which then changed colour depending on the strength of the WiFi signal. He moved it around a 3D space by hand and then recorded the results using a camera.

While effective, using his hand was hardly scientific, or accurate so he decided to upgrade to something more precise. Attaching the LED to a CNC milling machine, Thiebaut was not only able to create a more accurate picture of signal strength but he was also able to turn it into 3D.

You can explore the resulting 3D map here which shows that while WiFi appears to your phone to be everywhere, it's actually a flowing alien world of signal strength.
