Jace Larke found himself in an almost impossible situation: his wife was in labour, he was over 2,000 miles away on the other side of Australia, and he was almost certain that he would end up missing the birth of his son.
Of course in today's world, the idea of 'missing' anything is becoming almost redundant -- and sure enough, virtual reality was on hand to prove it.
Utilising the considerable manpower of Samsung Australia, Jace was able to 'attend' the birth of his son using a Samsung Gear VR headset.
A team from Samsung helped set up the cameras in his wife Alison's hospital room in Perth. They then set up a live connection between the hospital room and Jace's Gear VR headset 2,485 miles away in the small mining town of Chinchilla.
Not only Jace able to witness the birth of his son live, but Samsung had also configured it so the pair could talk to each other throughout.
With the past 12 months seeing virtual reality focused solely on the entertainment industry, this is a rare glimpse into the other uses that VR will hopefully provide when it reaches the mainstream in the next 18-24 months.
