#GirlsWithToys: Women In STEM Post Photos Of Themselves At Work, Prove The Industries Aren't Just For Men

#GirlsWithToys Proves Women Who Work In STEM Are Awesome

Men may still outnumber women in the world of STEM, but female scientists and engineers are uniting on social media to prove that women hold completely kick-ass jobs in the field.

Using the hashtag #GirlsWithToys, women have been posting photos of themselves alongside their equipment at work.

And their jobs look pretty damn cool.

The trend began after Shrinivas Kulkarni, a male astronomy and planetary science professor at the California Institute of Technology, made a controversial comment concerning women in STEM.

While speaking about astronomy in an interview with NPR on Saturday, the professor said: "Many scientists ... are what I call 'boys with toys.' I really like playing around with telescopes. It's just not fashionable to admit it."

Kulkarni's comments have been called "off the cuff" by some, others have said his words perpetuate the myth that women do not work in STEM.

As these ladies prove, women enjoy playing "with toys" just as much as men do.

Let's hope this hashtag inspires more girls to consider a career in this male-dominated (but not male-exclusive) field.
