Rory McIlroy Injury Sees Golf Champion's Bid For Win At The Open In Serious Doubt

Rory McIlroy Gets Little Sympathy Over Ill-Timed Kickabout With The Lads

Taking a tumble during a kickabout with the lads isn’t usually a problem…unless you’re a world golf pro and you’re left facing the prospect of missing one of the biggest tournaments of the year.

Unfortunately that’s the scenario Rory McIlroy has found himself in, since he is now suffering from a “total rupture” of a ligament in his left ankle.

The Northern Irish champ posted a picture on Instagram showing his left leg in a brace as he balanced on a pair of crutches.

Its caption read: “Total rupture of left ATFL (ankle ligament) and associated joint capsule damage in a soccer kickabout with friends on Saturday.

“Continuing to assess extent of injury and treatment plan day by day. Rehab already started..... Working hard to get back as soon as I can.”

The Open Championship, held at the home of golf in St Andrews in Scotland, is just days away, but the world number one has refused to rule himself out.

The 26-year-old has already won four major titles so far in his career.

According to the BBC, he will continue to have further scans over the next 48 hours.

Although many golfing fans were thoroughly disappointed by McIlroy’s injury, they also seemed somewhat irritated by his apparent carelessness…

Nice to see you being sympathetic, eh guys?

In fairness, many wished him a speedy recovery…
