But now Roger Helmer has made what could be his most outrageous statement yet.

Following the death of several migrants at the French port of Calais, the Ukip MEP tweeted:

Many were quick to suggest that they believed the backward-looking opinion simply fitted in with Ukip’s overall outlook…

Others simply pointed out the historical issues with Helmer’s tweet…

Some also questioned if Helmer was simply advocating an out-and-out war with France:
