40 Firefighters Tackle Huge Blaze Close To Birmingham Bullring

Fire crews were at the scene of a large blaze in Birmingham city centre on Thursday afternoon.

The fire is believed to have started at the covered Wholesale Market in the Pershore Street area.

Thick black smoke could be seen from the nearby Bullring shopping centre.

West Midlands Fire Service sent 40 firefighters and eight fire engines to the scene and the blaze was contained within around an hour.

Police have set up a cordon around the incident and it is not thought anyone was trapped in the premises, though it is still being searched.

The Wholesale Market is part of a 21-acre complex including horticultural, meat, fish, and poultry outlets.

Road closures are in place and residents are advised to avoid the area.
