West Yorkshire Police Slammed After Tweet Shaming A Homeless Couple

Police Mocked A Homeless Couple With This 'Outrageous' Tweet

West Yorkshire Police have faced heavy criticism after officers were caught tweet shaming a homeless a couple, who had not paid their car insurance.

The tweet posted by the unit's official account, @WYP_RPU, on Thursday read "vehicle seized for no insurance yesterday. Driver living out of car. #luggagewalkofshame."

It has been taken down since and an apology has been issued.

The tweet was met with outrage on social media with some calling for donations to be made to the couple in question.

The unit's main account also sent out another tweet about a person living out of their car, according to a report from the Huddersfield Examiner.

However, this time the image of the car was accompanied by #carinsurancenothomeinsurance.

West Yorkshire Police have issued a statement, apologising for the tweet:

"This was clearly an inappropriate tweet which we immediately removed from our Twitter account, and we are looking into the circumstances as to why it was posted.

"Regardless of any offences people have committed they still deserve their human dignity and we would apologise for the offence this has caused."
