Teen Told She Couldn't Work Any More Hours At McDonald's - Because 'Black Staff Are Underperforming'

A teenager who wanted to take on extra shifts at McDonald's to save for university says she was told by her boss she would not be able to because "she is black - and the black staff are underperforming".

Divine Tenn, who was working 20 hours a week at the Fort Parkway, Birmingham branch, was informed by her manager Jaskaran Singh Khela she would not be allowed any more shifts because of her race.

The teen was working for £5.19 an hour to save for university and had originally been given 20 hours a week

Khela refused the 18-year-old two extra shifts, reportedly telling her two of the 20 black staff, who make up a third of the branch's staff, were underperforming, according to the Sunday Mirror.

When Tenn questioned her boss, she was told it was "store policy".

Tenn, who has since quit, told the Sunday newspaper: "I am absolutely disgusted that a company so big and who I have worked hard for for over a year could treat me like this. I can't believe that racism still exists in this day and age."

A spokesperson for McDonald's told HuffPost UK: "We took this incident extremely seriously and launched a full investigation.

"The employee concerned no longer works for the company and support is in place for the members of staff affected by the incident. McDonald’s is an inclusive employer and any incidences of discrimination against our employees will not be tolerated."
