Poundland's status as a high-street staple looks set to be cemented, following its takeover of its biggest rival firm being "provisionally cleared" by the Government's competition authority on Tuesday.

In a deal tipped to be worth £55 million to the retailer, Poundland edged closer to buying out the '99p' franchise and its more than 200 stores.
