Hundreds of pairs of discarded wellies are being sent to people living in the ‘Jungle’ camp in Calais, Glastonbury organisers announced today.
Emily Eavis took to Twitter to announce the use of the leftovers:
A post on the Glastonbury website explained that team member Liz Clegg came up with the idea of sending the footwear to a good cause.
A group of volunteers then carefully sized and paired the shoes, as well as ensuring that they were of decent quality.
Clegg then took more than 500 pairs to Calais, as well as 2,000 unused waterproof ponchos and some first aid kits.
Wellies were carefully paired and quality-checked before being sent to Calais
Alongside French charity Association Salam, she helped to hand out the items, as well as offering first aid training.
While at the camp, Clegg realised there was a big problem with recycling and collecting rubbish and so the festival is also donating a supply of bin bags to help with this.
The festival site added: “The migrants in Calais are living in desperate conditions, and we’re very pleased to be able to help support their basic humanitarian needs.”
