Meanwhile, Sheridan Smith took home the Best Actress award for her portrayal of the late Cilla Black in her life story, ‘Cilla’.

However, it wasn’t all bad news for the BBC, who saw ‘EastEnders’ take home the coveted Best Soap award, beating off stiff competition from rival soaps ‘Coronation Street’, ‘Emmerdale’ and ‘Hollyoaks’.

The Beeb also saw its period drama ‘Poldark’ crowned Best New Drama.

And it wouldn’t be a TV awards show without Ant & Dec dominating the winners list.
