New Zealand Flag Competition Sees MP Try To Discredit Design By Comparing It To Nazi Swastika

New Zealand MP Tries To Discredit New Flag Design By Bringing Up Nazis

Godwin’s Law says that the longer a discussion goes on, the more likely a mention of the Nazis becomes - and the New Zealand Parliament has reached that point in their debate on the country’s new flag.

New Zealand First MP Denis O’Rourke clearly took a dislike to a new wildcard entry into the competition when he spoke during the discussion.

He took the trouble of printing off four of the Red Peak designs and stricken them together to show how they could be made to look like a Nazi swastika.

The party’s deputy leader Ron Mark also insisted that the stripe design bore a resemblance to the stripes painted on the side of Nazi sentry boxes.

The Red Peak design was a late wildcard entry to the competition for a new national flag.

More than 52,000 people have signed a petition for the Red Peak design to be considered, and the BBC reported that, despite prime minister John Key’s initial refusal to consider it, the flag has now been added to the line-up.

New Zealanders are to vote on their preferred flag design in November, before a second referendum in 2016 on whether or not to scrap their current flag.
