Sepp Blatter Subject To Criminal Proceedings, According To Switzerland's Top Prosecutor

Swiss Prosecutor Launches Criminal Proceedings Against Sepp Blatter

Criminal proceeding have been launched against Fifa boss Sepp Blatter, according to Switzerland’s top prosecutor.

The controversial football chief has been investigated on suspicion of misappropriating funds during his time as head of the world governing body.

A statement from Switzerland's attorney general's office said: “Swiss criminal proceedings against the President of Fifa, Mr. Joseph Blatter, have been opened on 24 September 2015 on suspicion of criminal mismanagement... and – alternatively – misappropriation."

The statement added that Blatter is also suspected of violating his “fiduciary duties" in connection with the Caribbean Football Union.

Blatter, 79, will step down in February as a result of the investigations by Swiss and American authorities, though the proceedings could hasten his exit.

In a statement, the 79-year-old's lawyer, Richard Cullen, said insisted "no mismanagement occurred."

According to AP, fresh revelations could implicate UEFA President Michel Platini, who was questioned on Friday over a "disloyal payment" from Blatter of 2 million Swiss francs in 2011.

In response to the criminal proceedings, Fifa issued a statement on Friday confirming they are cooperating with the investigation.

The statement read: "Since 27 May 2015, Fifa has been cooperating with the office of the Swiss attorney general and has complied with all requests for documents, data and other information. We will continue this level of cooperation throughout the investigation."

"Today, at the home of Fifa, representatives from the office of the Swiss attorney general conducted interviews and gathered documents pursuant to its investigation," it added. "Fifa facilitated these interviews as part of our ongoing cooperation. We will have no further comment on the matter as it is an active investigation."
