Nicola Sturgeon Tweets Support As Justin Trudeau Gives Canada First Gender Equal Cabinet

Sturgeon Was Just A Bit Too Keen To Piggyback On Trudeau's 'Drop Mic Moment'

Canada's new Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his Cabinet and revealed that out of 30 of his ministers, 15 are women.

Trudeau gave a simple three word answer, described as a 'drop mic moment', which was met with cheers when asked by a reporter why it's important to build a Cabinet with gender parity in mind, stating: "Because it's 2015".

But First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, was quick to bandwagon onto the statement, tweeting: "Great to see Canada join Scotland in having gender balance at top table of government."

Sturgeon, who announced her 50/50 gender balanced cabinet back in 2014, made the comments at a time when David Cameron's Conservative Cabinet of 31 ministers features only nine women.

In contrast, Jeremy Corbyn's current Labour shadow Cabinet features 16 women out of 31 ministers (51%). Whilst over in the US, Barack Obama's Cabinet features five women out of 15 government ministers.

Trudeau's new Cabinet is now the most diverse Canada has ever seen. As well as 50:50 gender representation, it also features an indigenous attorney general and a minister once imprisoned and wrongly accused of terrorism.

Gender equality in Parliament in Britain has been campaigned for by such groups as 50:50 Parliament. It claims that during the 2015 election there were 102 seats without any women candidates and 80% of seats with only two or fewer women selected to stand.

It also reports that at the current rate, it will take nearly half a century to achieve a balanced Parliament of around 50:50 men and women, adding that about 40 countries have proportionally more women in their Parliaments than the UK.
