Alien Hunters Intrigued By Mysterious Radio Signals Recorded In Australia

Aliens Could Be Behind A Mysterious Signal From Space

Mysterious signals, dubbed Fast Radio Bursts (FRB), have prompted experts to revisit the belief that aliens are trying to contact us.

Five random bursts were detected by a team in Melbourne, Australia, which could have been sent from another civilisation.

One of the astronomers involved in the finding, Emily Petroff, tweeted: "we have no idea what's going on, but we know it's definitely something cool."

Using the Parkes radio telescope, researchers picked up on one double blast along with four single bursts.

Those behind the discovery say that these latest series of signals have a "two-component profile," with each burst being separated by 2.4 milliseconds.

In their paper, they state: "Many of the proposed models to explain FRBs use a single high energy event involving compact objects (such as neutron star mergers) and therefore cannot easily explain a two-component FRB.

"Models that are based on extreme versions of flaring, pulsing or orbital events however could produce multiple component profiles."

While it is easy to get excited about the idea of aliens trying to contact us, in the past, these signals have been known to have a completely boring source.

In May, scientists had to dial down their excitement over similar signals detected by the Parkes radio telescope, when they found out that a microwave oven in the kitchen was responsible for the bursts. Fail.
