When Should You Feel Your Baby Kick? Midwife Explains When And How Often Unborn Babies Move

Midwife Explains: When And How Often Unborn Babies Move

One of the most exciting moments in your pregnancy is the first time you feel your baby kick, but many women aren't aware of when and how often this should happen.

Midwife Chantelle Winstanley says most mothers start to feel their baby move between 16 and 22 weeks.

"It feels like a flutter of bubbling in your tummy, like indigestion," she explains in the video above.

When will my baby move?

Between 23-30 weeks, Winstanley says the baby will become more vigorous in movement and you will be able to distinguish a kick and a roll. The baby will also respond to touch and sound at this time.

After 30 weeks, you may be able to tell the difference between a foot or a hand in your tummy.

"Babies often have their own movement patterns that don't go together with mums," explains Winstanley.

"When you're resting at night, it's normal for them to be active."

How often should my baby move?

Winstanley says every baby has their own movement pattern so it's good to get to know the pattern of your baby.

"We don't recommend counting their movements or recording it on a kick chart," she explains. "But if you do notice a difference in movement or reduction, contact your midwife."

How can I make my baby move?

If you're concerned, Winstanley recommends sitting or lying still for a short period of time and drinking a glass of cold water.

"The theory is that your digestive tract lies next to your uterus so the cold water will stimulate the baby to move," she says.

"Rub your tummy and talk to your baby, too."
