Everything You Need To Know About London Travel This Christmas

As the festive period draws ever nearer, it’s important to make sure you know exactly how you’re going to get around - so don’t be caught out by the Tube times.

Check below before you travel around Christmas and New Year.

Christmas Eve

On Christmas Eve, the London Underground will run a normal service until 3pm, after which there will be fewer trains on the Metropolitan line. The last trains on all lines will run to a Sunday timetable, except the Waterloo & City line which will close at around 11.15pm.

The District line will run between Kensington (Olympia) and Earl's Court from 6.45pm to 11.50pm.

Overground services will begin to wind down from 9pm and the last TfL Rail service will leave Liverpool Street at 9pm.

Normal service on the DLR lasts until 4pm, then off-peak service until 7.30pm and then an evening service with the last trains departing between 10.02pm and 11.01pm.

The Gatwick Express Heathrow Express will both run as normal but finish earlier.

Don't forget to check before you travel over the festive season

Christmas Day

There will be no Tube, DLR, Overground, TfL Rail or bus services running. Cycle hire will still be available though, so now is your chance to try it out.

The Gatwick Express will not run and The Heathrow Express will only run between Heathrow Central and Heathrow Terminal 4/5, from Christmas Day until December 28.

The Stansted Express will not run at all.

Boxing Day

There will be no Overground or TfL Rail services running.

There will mainly be a Sunday service on the Tube, although it will start half an hour later. The Waterloo & City line will not run.

Improvement works will affect the following lines: Circle line: no service between Hammersmith and Tower Hill (via King's Cross St. Pancras). There will be a special Circle line service between Edgware Road and Barking (via Victoria).

Hammersmith & City line: no service between Hammersmith and Aldgate East. Replacement buses will call at: Baker Street - Edgware Road - Paddington - Royal Oak - Westbourne Park - Ladbroke Grove - Latimer Road - Shepherd's Bush (Central line) - Shepherd's Bush Green (for Shepherd's Bush Market and Goldhawk Road) - Hammersmith.

Metropolitan line: No service between Baker Street and Aldgate. A Sunday service will run on the rest of the line, and there will be fewer trains after 8pm.

Trains are not running all the way to Gatwick but are running between London Victoria and East Grinstead. A connecting bus service will run between East Grinstead and Gatwick Airport.

The Stansted Express will ru na reduced service. The first train will depart Liverpool Street at 6.25am, and then every half an hour until 11.25pm.

The first trains will depart Stansted at 6.30am and then every 30 minutes until 12.30am.

There will be no services to or from Stratford.

There will be no service on Christmas Day

New Year’s Eve

There will be no service on the District line between Kensington (Olympia) and Earl's Court and no service on the Piccadilly line between Uxbridge and Rayners Lane. The last Waterloo & City train will depart at 2.40am.

A number of stations will close or be exit-only for crowd control. These are: Blackfriars (closed from 11.30pm), Charing Cross (exit-only from 11.45pm), Covent Garden (exit-only from 7pm), Embankment (closed from 11.30pm to 12.15am), Leicester Square (exit-only from 8pm) and Westminster

A Saturday service will run on the following Overground lines: Richmond/Clapham Junction to Stratford, Watford Junction to Euston, Gospel Oak to Barking and between Highbury & Islington and New Cross, Clapham Junction, Crystal Palace and West Croydon.

A normal weekday service on the DLR will operate until 7.30pm, afterwards trains will run every ten minutes.

There will be a half hourly service between London Paddington and Heathrow Airport. The Gatwick Express will not run.

Don’t forget, between 11.45am and 4.30pm the London Underground will run a free service.

New Year’s Day

The Tube, London Overground and DLR will run a Saturday service.

TfL Rail will run fewer trains between Liverpool Street and Seven Kings (approx every 15 minutes).

As on New Year's Eve. there will be a half hourly service between London Paddington and Heathrow Airport and The Gatwick Express will not run.

The Stansted Express will run a Saturday service.
