Alan was known for appearing in films as varied as ‘Die Hard’, ‘Love Actually’ and ‘Sense And Sensibility’, but to devotees of the wizarding world, he’ll forever go down in cinema history as Professor Severus Snape.

Following his death, which was announced on Thursday, ‘Harry Potter’ fans have taken to Twitter in their droves, sharing one touching moment as a mark of respect to the British actor.

The 'wands in the air' gesture was first used in ‘Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince’, following the death of Hogwarts headmaster, Albus Dumbledore.

Multitudes of fans have now taken the symbol into the real world, using it to honour the death of Alan Rickman.

Alan’s death was confirmed on Thursday afternoon, with his family revealing that he had been suffering from cancer.

While his interpretation as Professor Snape in the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise introduced him to a new generation of fans when ‘Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone’ hit cinemas in 2001, it was his role playing the villain Hans Gruber in ‘Die Hard’ opposite Bruce Willis in 1988, which launched his global big screen career.

He is survived by his wife, Rima Horton, who he had been in a relationship with for 50 years, before they tied the knot last year.
