'EastEnders' fans have been left devastated at the news that much-loved character Peggy Mitchell is set to be killed off later this year, after she returned to reveal she has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

The original Walford matriarch - played by Barbara Windsor - has been a fixture on our screens since 1991, and despite leaving Albert Sqaure in 2010, she has continued to pop back for guest appearances.

Some of Peggy Mitchell's most memorable moments

Over the last 25 years, the pub landlady has been involved in many of the soap's most iconic storylines along with the rest of her on-screen "faaaaaamily".

She's beaten breast cancer twice, enjoyed many scraps with the likes of Pat Butcher and Sharon Watts, and shouted "Get outta my pub!" more times than we've had hot dinners.

But spring 2016 will see Peggy meet her maker, following Barbara's decision to leave the character behind for good.
