Sam Smith has followed in Adele's footsteps by scooping a Best Original Song Academy Award for his James Bond theme, at this year's Oscars.

Just as Adele did for 'Skyfall' in 2013, so multiple Grammy-winner Sam collected his statuette for 'The Writing's on the Wall', the song he co-penned with Jimmy Napes for 'Spectre'.

Sam cited his inspiration Ian McKellen as he collected his award, saying, "I read an article a few months ago by Ian McKellen and he said no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar..." (Sir Ian was referring to the acting nominations, but let Sam continue...)
"I stand here tonight as a proud gay man and I hope we can all stand together as equals one day."
Sam was a surprise winner in the room, following Lady Gaga's stunning performance of her own nominated song, 'Til It Happens To You', the soundtrack to the documentary 'The Hunting Ground', which explores the epidemic of sexual assault on college campus in the US. She had been boosted, not only by a stirring introduction by Vice-President Joe Biden, but also being joined on stage by fellow survivors of sexual assault.
Despite this, it was Sam's night, making him only the second James Bond singer to triumph at the Oscars.
