This amazing time-lapse picture shows how a tiny piece of paper not much bigger than a postage stamp can stop fruit from going off.
The filter, discreetly placed in the pack of strawberries on the left, absorbs the ripening gas emitted by the fruit and keeps it fresher for longer.
The pioneering new technology developed by British company It’s Fresh! is reducing food waste for consumers and helping leading supermarkets save millions.
The time-lapse shows how the strawberries on the right in the picture start to go mouldy after three days in a fridge.
But the punnet containing the It’s Fresh! filter remain unmarked and looking newly picked.
The filters, which are now being used by all the main supermarket chains, work in an entirely natural way and do not involve any chemicals.
Simon Lee, the founder of It’s Fresh! said: “Our discrete It's Fresh! filters purify the air around perishable produce, from field to fork; helping our customers deliver fruit that is fresher for longer, thereby significantly increasing sales and slashing unnecessary waste - right into the consumer's home.”
