Health leaders have urged Jeremy Hunt to address climate change-related health issues more effectively, as a video reveals the devastating impact it could have on the UK medical system.

A major alliance of experts have urged the health secretary to address the "unacceptable threat to the wellbeing of our patients and the British public" caused by climate change in an open letter.

The newly-formed UK Health Alliance on Climate Change says Hunt must urgently address issues like the fact that 9.5% of healthcare buildings in England are currently in flood risk areas.

"It is time to place health firmly at the centre of the UK’s efforts to mitigate climate change," it tells Mr Hunt in the letter singed by the heads of the Royal College of GPs,the Royal College of Nursing, the British Medical Association, the British Medical Journal and more.

Meanwhile, the video from The Huffington Post UK highlights that 2,000 people died in the 2003 heatwave, and deaths through overheating could triple by 2050.

Up to 100 hospitals could be exposed to significant flooding by 2080, he adds.

The alliance will work to raise awareness of the health risks climate change carries, and to call for a strong policy response nationally and internationally, focused on areas like air quality, cleaner transport, energy efficiency and sustainable diets.
