BBC Presenter Couple Tony Wadsworth And Julie Mayer Appear In Court Over Child Sex Allegations

The offences allegedly happened in the 1990s.

Two BBC radio presenters have appeared in court accused of committing a series of child sex offences in the 1990s.

Married couple Tony and Julie Wadsworth, who have both worked for BBC Radio Leicester and Birmingham-based BBC WM, were charged by Warwickshire Police earlier this year.

Tony Wadsworth, 68, of Old Mill Road, Broughton Astley, Leicestershire, is charged with five counts of inciting a boy under the age of 16 to commit an act of gross indecency, The Press Association reports.

His 58-year-old wife, also of Old Mill Road, is charged with seven counts of the same offence. She is known as Julie Mayer professionally.

The BBC confirmed in April that the charges did not relate to the presenters' positions with the corporation.

When the pair were charged, a Warwickshire Police spokesman said: "A couple from Leicestershire have been charged with child sex offences against four children, aged between 11 and 15, between 1996 and 1999, in Atherstone, Warwickshire."

Both broadcasters, appeared before magistrates in Leamington Spa, face a further allegation of outraging public decency. They spoke only to confirm their names during the hearing.
