A young genderqueer artist has launched a fundraising appeal to finance surgery privately after being told of a long wait for help on the NHS.
Ellis, who studied Arts and History at Goldsmiths, University of London, hopes to raise funds for a double mastectomy and chest reconstructive surgery after identifying themselves as non-binary, or genderqueer.
They are seeking treatment privately, after being left desperate by a current 13-month wait for treatment on the NHS.
Ellis told The Huffington Post UK: "I love the NHS but they are pushed for resources. Going private is a big decision, but I want to move on from this part of my life."
The 26-year-old continued: "Since I hit puberty I’ve been saying the same thing. For ten years I’ve been called mad. For two years I’ve been called a sissy little queer.
"This year I want to look at myself in the mirror and relate to what I see."
Ellis' GoFundMe page has receive donations totaling over £2,200 - roughly a third of the total £6,000 cost.
Ellis said: "It means so much to see people contribute. Most people I know are working class and it’s a bit overwhelming. It’s been shared a lot of times.
"I know that even just £5 can be a lot for people."
The Arts and History graduate will go onto study a Masters at Goldsmiths later this year.
"For someone like me, a 13-month wait comes after a long process of coming to terms with their situation and it really impacts our health," they said.
"Being white and somewhat educated puts me in a position of privilege over other trans people, specifically people of colour and/or women.
"I wouldn't be this close to getting this treatment if it wasn't for that."
