The booing seemed to come from all sides

Ukip’s Douglas Carswell was booed and hissed at by MPs today as he rose to ask a question in Prime Minister’s Questions.

The Clacton MP, who defected from the Tories to Ukip in 2014, was one of the leading campaigners for the UK to vote to leave the EU in last week’s referendum.

Since then, there have been claims of a rise in hate crimes against immigrants, with some blaming the tone of aspects of the Leave campaign.

Today, Speaker John Bercow had to step in and silence the Commons as Carswell tried to ask his question.

Last year, Carswell had to be escorted to safety by police after being surrounded by a mob of left-wing activists in Westminster.

It wasn't just the Ukip who was met with jeers today.

Tory MP, Bernard Jenkin, one of the architects of the official Vote Leave campaign was also shouted down as he tried to question the Prime Minister.

Jenkin used his intervention to criticise Ukip leader Nigel Farage, who yesterday delivered a highly-combative 'victory' speech in the European Parliament.

Labour MP Paul Flynn shouted: "He represents you!"
