Nurse Defends Herself Against Claims That She Can’t Do Her Job Because Of Her Hair Colour

'I'm surprised they let you work there...'

A nurse has taken to Facebook to defend herself against claims that she can’t do her job properly because of her coloured hair, tattoos and piercings.

Mary Walls Penney shared her story to remind people that your worth in the workplace isn’t based on your appearance, but your ability.

Penney was out shopping in her uniform when the till cashier noticed her name badge with the hospital on it, and asked her what she did at the facility.

Informing her that she was a nurse, the cashier said: “I’m surprised they let you work there like that. What do your patients think about your hair?”

The cashier also mentioned that she was not allowed to have her hair coloured at the supermarket and was shocked that the rules were different at the hospital.

Not content on humiliating Penney by herself, she then encouraged other people in the queue to join in, including an old woman.

After the embarrassing incident, Penney wanted to share her story and her response.

Penney said: “I can’t recall a time that my hair color has prevented me from providing life saving treatment to one of my patients. My tattoos have never kept them from holding my hand and as they lay frightened and crying because Alzheimer’s has stolen their mind.”

“My multiple ear piercings have never interfered with me hearing them reminisces about their better days or listening to them as they express their last wishes.”

Adding: “My tongue piercing has never kept me from speaking words of encouragement to a newly diagnosed patient or from comforting a family that is grieving.”

Penney’s touching message has clearly resonated with people as her story has already received over 3,000 comments and 34,000 likes.
