‘Coronation Street’ viewers may still be wiping their eyes after the tragic departure of one of the soap’s favourite characters Kylie Platt, but there’s better news for fans of some previous stars of the show, including a certain Toyah Battersby!
Exec producers recently announced plans to broadcast the soap six shows a week, a mission that will clearly require more storylines, which means more cast. For the latter, it seems they’ve looked to the past to brighten up the present.
The Sun reports that characters Toyah Battersby, Brian Packham and Daniel Osbourne will all be returning to the cobbles. They cite a Corrie source as saying, “”They’ve had good storylines before and will definitely stir up some trouble.”
Georgia Taylor, who played Toyah - one of the legendary Battersbys - previously departed the show in 2003. During her six years on the street, Toyah had more than her share of challenges, including being abducted, and having an underage sexual relationship. She was named after the 1980s popstar, who gave the show permission for her name to be used.
School headmaster Brian, played by actor Peter Gunn, was last seen in 2013. A new actor will be recruited to play Ken’s son Daniel.
The extra show is set to start airing in autumn of next year, so the three extra characters will be installed by then.
This news will come as light relief for fans, still sharing their devastation on social media after Kylie Platt died in her husband David’s arms in last night’s emotional double episode, fatally injured in a stabbing by Clayton.
Both actors Paula Lane and Jack P Shepherd have been praised for their striking performances. Jack told ‘This Morning’ last week that those tears seen by viewers “were real. We couldn’t physically stop crying”.
