Sarah Silverman was brought on stage at the Democratic National Convention on Monday evening to help build a feeling of unity between rival factions of the party by dropping a few gags.

Only Bernie Sanders supporters were having none of it.

The stand-up comedian had supported Sanders in the primaries but announced she would be voting for Hilary Clinton now it was clear she is leading the Democratic presidential candidate race.

She said: “As I continue to be inspired and moved to action by the ideals set for by Bernie, who will never stop fighting for us, I am proud to be a part of Bernie’s movement, and a vital part of that movement is making absolutely sure that Hillary Clinton is the next president of the United States.”

The crowd, which contained a sizeable Sanders contingent, did not take well to the endorsement and began booing and chanting: “Bernie! Bernie! Bernie!”

The awkwardness only increased when Silverman was asked to extend her brief segment due to a technical glitch, with the crowd’s jeering only getting louder.

Eventually Silverman, visibly riled, lost patience and said: “To the Bernie-or-bust people, let me just tell you: You’re being ridiculous.”
