The victim suffered an intracranial haemorrhage

Detectives investigating the death of a young London banker, who died following a single punch, have arrested a man on suspicion of his murder.

Oliver Dearlove, from Eltham, passed away in hospital after he was assaulted in an apparently unprovoked attack in Tranquil Vale, Blackheath on 28 August.

A 31-year-old man was arrested on Thursday morning. He was also arrested on suspicion of ABH after he attended a south London police station by appointment.

Detectives from the Homicide and Major Crime Command continue to investigate.

A post-mortem examination held at Greenwich Mortuary on 29 August, gave the provisional cause of death as intracranial haemorrhage. Further tests are ongoing.

On the night of his death, Dearlove was in Blackheath with friends, and they had visited a bar in Montpelier Vale.

The group left the bar and walked down Montpelier Vale, turning right into Tranquil Vale, where they waited the arrival of a pre-booked taxi.

At this stage it is believed that whilst waiting in Tranquil Vale, Dearlove’s group began speaking to a group of women. Early witness accounts indicate that a man approached the group and assaulted one of Dearlove’s friends, before striking Dearlove which caused him to collapse.

Detective Chief Inspector Lee Watling, who is leading the investigation, said: “Our investigating is continuing and we’ve made huge progress in identifying key witnesses and recovering vital CCTV.

“However, if you were in the area that night and saw something that may help our investigation but haven’t yet spoken to us then please call the Incident Room.”

Police are asking people to call the Incident Room on 020 8721 4205 or to remain anonymous, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
