This Morning's Holly Willoughby And Phillip Schofield Apologise For 'Great British Bake Off' 'Prank'

'We had no idea! We're so sorry!'

Remember when ‘This Morning’ built ‘Great British Bake Off’ viewers’ hopes up, at a time when tensions were already pretty high in the fan community, only for them to “prank” us with the news that the new presenting team wouldn’t be Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield?

Yeah, well. They’ve since apologised for it.

It all started on Wednesday (14 September) when the ‘This Morning’ Twitter team published this tweet, revealing that they’d be announcing the presenters taking over from Mel and Sue at the helm of ‘Bake Off’.

Before long, Twitter was abuzz with speculation about the announcement, only for the show to open with Holly and Phil “joking” that they wouldn’t be taking on the job.

Understandably, fans of the show were seriously annoyed, with Holly and Phil issuing an apology later in the show, insisting that the tweet had nothing to do with them.

After Rylan Clark-Neal pointed out that they were being dragged on Twitter, Phil insisted: “We had no idea that our interactive team had done that!”

A stunned Holly added: “We didn’t even know! We’re so sorry!”

With Mel and Sue gone, attention now turns to whether ‘Bake Off’ judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry would be making the jump when the show moves to Channel 4 at the end of its current run.

Mary’s husband recently implied that she wouldn’t be quitting the BBC, though, with new reports suggesting the Beeb is “bending over backwards” in its attempts to keep her on side.

‘This Morning’ airs weekdays on ITV from 10.30am.
