Police were called to the scene of the shooting around 10.20pm and have said it appears to be a “targeted incident”.

Southwood and Bryanston roads have reportedly been cordoned off as detectives search for evidence.

Superintendent Jonathon Davies said while police enquiries were at an “early stage” the shooting does appear to be a “targeted incident”.

He added to ITV: “I would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the shooting, or who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area around this time, to call us so we can find those responsible and put them before the courts.

“We will not tolerate the use of firearms on the streets of Merseyside and are relentless in our efforts to bring those who are prepared to use them to justice.”
