Water shortages have plagued California for years, and they show no signs of abating.

With the global temperature rising rapidly, climate scientists have predicted that California’s next drought will be permanent.

The onus is now on engineers to come up with solutions.

One of the most elegant proposals is a giant, solar-powered pipe which could turn 1.5 billion gallons of salt water into drinking water each year.

The structure’s circulating pipes remove impurities from the seawater without using expensive and polluting chemicals.
