Nationalism: The Way Backwards

A few years ago, sick of what was happening to Britain I naively attended a local BNP meeting. It all appeared quite normal, mostly working class men with exactly the same worries that I had, such as mass uncontrolled immigration and the European Union.

Of course, I had heard about the BNP, so I ended up going to a few more local meetings before I committed and joined them.

I never plugged myself into their information network; the website, leaflets or newspapers. I still got most of my current affairs information from the mainstream media; and saw the country getting worse and worse. I was running on pure despair at the way our country was going and anger at our government.

In quite a short time I was made local, then regional organiser. With this came the responsibility of organising and speaking at public meetings. Very little changed, the same concerned people came to the meetings, feeling they had nowhere else to go; no other party appeared to care about their concerns.

However, with this role I had to attend officials' meetings, this is when the first cracks started to appear.

This is when I began to meet the grassroots hardliners. Many of them not major players, but they were the foot soldiers, the activists of British nationalism.

In 2009 Nick Griffin got elected as MEP for the North West of England. The BNP hierarchy are extremely short on the ground with anyone of any intelligence. They are 'experts' on nationalism, Moseley, Anglo-Saxon heritage but absolutely no idea about the big world outside their tiny little circle of fanatical friends. In fact, it is no exaggeration to state that nationally there are only around 40 main players in the nationalist movement, and Griffin needed staff to run his MEPs office. He needed people who could actually talk to the public and pull of the image that he would be working for the electorate.

The plan soon became apparent that the office was to be a cover to elicit money from the EU for the purposes of running and expanding the BNP. So whilst they beavered away promoting and running the party they needed someone to work on the actual case files that genuine constituents had contacted them about. This is where I came in.

I got many requests for help from people of the north-west. A vast majority of the time there was nothing I could do. Most of the requests had to be dealt with by local Cllrs or MPs. But, I was told not to let the constituent or their relevant elected officials know this because they were not BNP and we couldn't give the opposition the chance to help and potentially win a voter.

So they were just told "there's nothing anyone can do for you" the only answer is a BNP government.

Apart from starting to see through their backward ideology, I was now seeing them for the electoral frauds and charlatans that they were.

Since I attended my first BNP meeting I was running on anger and frustration. The last few months had seen the cracks in my belief getting larger and larger. I now also had to plug myself in into the propaganda machine. A machine that runs on negativity, hate, distrust and a distorted pride based solely on the fact that you happen to be born in this country or have white skin. This propaganda machine either sucks you further in or blows you out. Thankfully in my case it was the latter.

I realised I had made a massive mistake getting into politics with these idiots, but how do you leave? I had heard the threats aimed at other people bandied around by knuckle-draggers like Clive Jefferson; a self-confessed hoodlum and gangster.

Then came the infamous BBC Question Time appearance by Griffin and the embarrassing way he tried to deny the Holocaust, and his sickening defence of the KKK.

'That's it', I thought whatever the consequences I can't remain part of this.

The next day I went to the office early and left a letter of resignation, and hoped for the best.

The BNP 'electorally' came quite close to becoming serious players in British politics. They are all but finished now, but the same major players have simply moved across to other parties. Or started new parties.

All that we need in Britain is another catalyst to make the British voter susceptible to their lies and we could see resurgence under another name. After all the NF was finished then the BNP came along. Who's next?
