Former Chairman of the Conservative party Norman Tebbit has sent shockwaves through the world of hip-hop this week with his outspoken comments about the dangers of having "a queen who is a lesbian".

Ostensibly a warning about the possible consequences of legalizing same-sex marriage, Tebbit's remarks have...

The Conservative MP for Aldershot, Sir Gerald Howarth, caused outrage during Monday's Commons debate on the Marriage (Same-Sex Couples) Bill, when he warned that "there are plenty in the aggressive homosexual community" who perceive the bill as "but a stepping stone to something even further".

A spokesperson...

Review: 'The God Argument - The Case Against Religion and for Humanism' By A.C. Grayling

(0) Comments | Posted 31 March 2013 | (02:17)

According to Catherine Pepinster, A.C. Grayling's new book The God Argument is a "stern, unrelenting and unforgiving" attack on faith, a "vilification of theists" written in the style of "an angry Old Testament prophet". Grayling, we are told, is guilty of "railing at religionists" such as...

It's Wednesday lunchtime at the Groucho Club in Soho and I'm determined to buy Richard O'Brien a drink. He won't have it.

"No, no, you can't," he says. "You're not a member". It's his way of insisting that he buys the round, so I decide not to press the...

Review: Unhitched - The Trial of Christopher Hitchens by Richard Seymour

(4) Comments | Posted 6 February 2013 | (22:07)

Towards the end of the ninth century, Pope Stephen VI had the body of his predecessor Formosus exhumed, dressed in its sacerdotal attire, and propped up in the council chamber to face trial for trumped-up charges of perjury and usurping the bishopric of Rome. During the "prosecution", Stephen hurled abuse...

The internet is a realm of idiocy unchecked. You needn't look any further than the comment threads beneath any YouTube clip to realise that ignorance is no guarantee of humility. Undeterred by illiteracy they forge ahead, virus-like; attaching, penetrating and replicating their way through the infinite fabric of...

Richard Dawkins and the Myth of the Angry Atheist

(177) Comments | Posted 17 December 2012 | (23:00)

Atheists are angry, twitching creatures. When faced with the godly they foam at the mouth, wailing and gnashing their teeth. Their sense of moral and intellectual superiority is a fragile thing, easily bruised. They deserve our pity, not our scorn.

This, at least, is the way in which prominent...

A Near-Death Experience At The Edinburgh Fringe

(0) Comments | Posted 8 August 2012 | (18:17)

Like many of my distant ancestors I am spending this month performing in a cave. Such is the fate of the stand-up comic that for one month every year we revert to a Cro-Magnon existence. We tell jokes in subterranean oubliettes whilst condensation creeps down walls freshly adorned with electricity...

Starbucks: Where Everybody Knows Your Name

(8) Comments | Posted 3 August 2012 | (00:00)

Starbucks cares about me. I know this because they've recently started asking my name when I order my coffee. Yes, there's something a little Kafkaesque about that sort of thing, but you can have fun with it. Try using a pseudonym that the barista is unlikely to be able to...
