Reader in Social Risk Research in the the social science department (SSPSSR) at the University of Kent.

My title is Reader in Social Risk Research, and I’m based in the social science department

(SSPSSR) at the University of Kent. I’ve researched a wide variety of issues and

behaviours since my first study into health fears of mobile phones and masts, published

as Cellular Phones, Public Fears and a Culture of Precaution (Cambridge University

Press, 2004). On Amazon at: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cellular-Phones-Public-Culture-
Precaution/dp/0521520827/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1393942834&sr=1-

Some of my more recent studies include drink spiking fears and preventive rituals, the

wearing of flu masks in Japan, and the curious story of so-called ‘passive drinking’. What

unites my studies is the theme of risk and how we (mis)perceive and (mis)manage it –

but understanding this in more social than the usual psychological terms in which risk is

understood. As you can see, I’m also particularly interested in risk in relation to drinking and

health. A lot of my research is available on https://kent.academia.edu/AdamBurgess
