Actor, writer & broadcaster - creator and star of BBC 1's Citizen Khan

Adil Ray's media career has been incredibly versatile. Adil has presented on all the major BBC radio networks (Radio 1, R2, R3, R4 and Radio 5Live) as well as the four main BBC TV channels.

Today, Adil appears as one of our much loved TV characters, Mr Khan, in BBC1 sitcom Citizen Khan. A sitcom which Adil has created, co-written and stars in and is currently in it's third series. At last year's Royal Television Society North West Awards, Citizen Khan won Best Comedy Programme, and Adil won Best Performance in a Comedy for Citizen Khan. Adil also won the Best TV Character award for "Mr Khan" at the inaugural Asian Media Awards in 2013.

Adil's creation, Mr Khan, first appeared on screen in 2009 when Adil made his comedy debut on BBC2’s Bellamy’s People. Adil’s appearances on Bellamy’s People came as a result of comedy legends Charlie Higson and Paul Whitehouse being aware of his comedy creations on the radio. Other characters of Adil's included British Pakistani MC Raa and the money making Guru, Guru Dev.

Adil is also known for his documentary making. In 2010 Adil presented the acclaimed BBC3 documentary Exposed: Groomed For Sex. Adil received praise for the way in which he tackled the controversial issue of young girls being groomed by some Pakistani men, creating a thought provoking and brave documentary and picking up a Royal Television Society Award for Best Current Affairs.

Adil has enjoyed great success as a radio presenter. After several years in commercial radio Adil joined the BBC Asian Network in 2000 and stayed there for almost 10 years. He launched the late-night Adil Ray Show where he gave a platform for young aspiring artists to promote their musical talents, including the first radio interview for Jay Sean. In 2008 he won the award for Best Radio Show at the UK Asian Music Awards. Adil presented BBC Asian Network's Breakfast show until 2009. Adil gained consistently record figures whilst there which he puts down to providing his audience a "chance to laugh, sometimes at themselves."

Adil's other radio work has also included hosting the late night slot (10pm-1am) on BBC Radio 5live. Adil's ability to shift from comedy performer to a news broadcaster was evident as he broke news stories such as the UK summer riots, phone hacking and the night the UK went to war in Libya.

Adil's other radio work includes hosting a number of cricket based shows for BBC Radio 5Live and Radio 4’s Test Match Special including the 6duck6 phone in. Adil was responsible for a number of key interviews regarding the Pakistani match fixing cricket scandal. Adil has also had the honour of hosting the institution that is the 5live football phone-in 606.

Other radio credits include deputising on BBC Radio 2 and hosting a number of documentaries for BBC Radio 4 including Picturing Britain, which was a five-part documentary meeting prominent British photographers such as Rankin.

Adil’s other TV credits include co-presenting BBC Two series Explore where he reported on news stories from Argentina and Turkey; the award-winning BBC Two series Desi DNA; the RTS-nominated comedy Is It Coz I Is Black? (BBC Three) and BBC Four's Tales From Europe with Kirsty Wark.
