DJ Edu

DJ, Radio Presenter, Columnist, Producer

Born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya he began his career already ranking at the top as one of the premier DJs Home boyz DJ crew, resident at Carnivore, and a presenter on Capital FM.

Moving abroad, the 2009 African Music Awards winner of the Best African Radio DJ awards raised the bar for himself even higher. Having been voted the Best Kenyan DJ in the UK in 2004 he started to see his life-long ambition materialise: to put the latest and greatest sounds produced by Africa’s new generation on the global map.

Being BBC Radio 1 and BBC 1xtra’s first and still only anchor for the African mix show DNA (Destination Africa), he is solely responsible for the inception and growth of an audience that has increased over the last 7 years. With his signature mashup style of DJ’ing Edu has fuelled the love of African music lovers in the diaspora (having played in Kenya, Ethiopia, South Africa, Tanzania, Ghana, France, Greece, Germany, Switzerland and Spain) and won over audiences previously unfamiliar with the increasingly popular genres from the continent.

Via this platform Edu has been able to break some of the biggest names on the global African music scene in the UK – artists such as K’Naan and Nneka both of whom went on to win the coveted MOBO
(Music of Black Origin) Award. Akon, D'banj, Casttro,Atumpan, Kaz, Dr Sid,Ahmed Soultan, Kas,Hip Hop Pantsula, J Martins,Wande Coal,Zaki Ibrahim, M.I, P Unit, Jesse Jagz, Brymo, Ice Prince, Guru, Tiffany Asa, Nalu, Exile,2face, Amani, Cynthia Mare, Kleptomaniax, Ulopa, Stella Mwangi,Darey Wyre, M3nsa, Wanlov The Kubolor, Winky D, Bkay & Kazz are a few other names from an impressive, long list known to have guested on DNA.

As an established tastemaker, Edu spreads his reach in editorial and the corporate worlds. His DNA show can also be heard on Funkhauseuropa Radio in Germany, writes a column for glossy global
African Magazine, Arise and is the man behind the African mixes on Emirates Airlines’.

He is also continuing a 10-year stint as a promoter and is currently working on an African TV show to air in the UK & Europe as well as a Video Mix for Channel O in Africa.
