Dr Leon Moosavi is a sociologist of race and religion, specialising in Muslim communities in Britain. He is currently working on research projects relating to extremism, cultural diversity and community cohesion. He completed his PhD in the Sociology Department of Lancaster University in 2011. His thesis examined conversion to Islam in contemporary Britain, with the title: Islamophobia, Belonging and ‘Race’ in the Experiences of Muslim Converts in Britain.
So what does the growth in the number of Muslims mean? Inevitably, the Far Right will claim we are witnessing the 'Islamification of Britain'. More sober minded people will rightfully recognise that this is not occurring whatsoever.
Welcoming Tommy Robinson into the political process also means that his Islamophobic rhetoric can be challenged head-on. On the streets, Tommy Robinson is heard and applauded. In political chambers, he will be undone.
