James Kearney

Peace and Security Programmes Manager at the United Nations Association – UK (UNA-UK)

James Kearney has a breadth of experience in the peace and security area, having worked for the Africa Educational Trust in London, Nairobi and Rumbek, Southern Sudan; and in the Office of the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict. After studying History at Oxford, James attained a Master’s degree in International Relations from Cambridge University. His doctoral studies at Edinburgh University examined post-genocide Rwanda and provided the basis for a contribution to an edited collection, "Education and Reconciliation: Exploring Conflict and Post-Conflict Situations", published by Continuum in 2011.

The key focus of James’ role at UNA-UK is to lead on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, Responsibility to Protect, civilian protection and peacekeeping programmes. He has been a visiting instructor and lecturer on Global Government at the Raphael Lemkin Seminar Series on Genocide Prevention, held annually at Auschwitz-Birkenau, was a member of the UNA-UK’s delegation to the 2010 Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference in New York, and has been a guest lecturer at many UK universities including the London School of Economics, Kings College London and Cambridge. James is also a member of the Nuclear Weapons Policy Liaison Group, is founder, convenor and co-chair of the Young Nuclear Professionals Group and is also a member of the NGO Military Contact Group, convened by the British Red Cross. Most recently, James has been a contributing editor of After the Arab Spring: Reconstruction and State-Building, published in 2012 by WITAN, London.
