James Young 530

BBC presenter

James is a BBC presenter on the BBC New Talent Hotlist 2017 and has previously engaged in public speaking roles about technology, healthcare and bionics. He is fascinated by the idea of merging technology with his body, but at the same time aims to explore how we engage with it mentally and emotionally, looking at how our creations in turn shape us.

James reports that he was curious about cybernetics even before his accident in 2012,
whereby he fell under a train, but now had a ‘fun’ opportunity to participate a bit more than before. He’s since been involved in research by universities and private organisations, and even had an artistic alternative limb ( www.altlimbpro.com ) made, funded by a video game
company Konami. (BBC Three’s ‘Bodyhack: Metal Gear Man’, available on YouTube
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZNFkMW9uFg&t=433s )
He has also been seeking ways to better integrate functional bionic limbs, hoping to connect them to his nervous system and the bones of his skeleton (osseointegration
https://www.gofundme.com/titaniumjames ). In November 2016 James underwent Targeted Muscle Reinnervation surgery to prepare him to integrate such technology into his body in
the future.
