Karl Gregory is the Managing Director of the UK’s largest and most successful dating and relationship sites - match.com, matchaffinity.com and DatingDirect.com - a position he has held since September 2009. In this role, Karl has been responsible for growing match.com so that it is now a category leader and for positioning the brands firmly at the heart of British culture.
Karl is half Maltese, half Scottish and joined match from career service iProfile. His experience spans across blue chip companies, smaller start-ups and world-class Internet brands. He has also previously worked as head of marketing for Yahoo! Search, UK & Ireland, where he was a key part of the management team tasked with growth and development.
Karl is a natural entrepreneur – he grew up in Malta and it was there, inspired by his father and aged just 17, that he set up his own business importing cleaning materials and selling them onto small retailers to pay his way through University. Karl was also the Marketing Director of Touch Local, the online business directory. As part of the senior team, Karl was instrumental in driving the business forward to secure £7m investment from one of the premier venture capital companies, Balderton Capital, who have backed other successful businesses such as Bebo, BetFair and LOVEFiLM. In May 2010, TouchLocal was recognised as one of Europe's Top 50 fastest growing and most innovative digital media companies at the Media Momentum Awards.
Karl is passionate about the role of the internet in business. He holds an MSc in International Marketing from the University of Strathclyde and a BSC in Business Management and Computing from the University of Malta. During his time at the University of Strathclyde Karl co-authored a paper with Dr. Jim Hammill predicting the potential for the Internet to revolutionise the way that UK SMEs could compete with larger international players. The paper was critically acclaimed and was published in the Journal of Marketing Management in 1997.
Karl believes that the key to match’s business success lies in its relationship with its members. His weekends are often spent attending match weddings and he has become something of an expert on the UK love landscape during his time at the company. However, he often says he wishes he’d listened more in the past to his wife and her friends when they discussed relationships around the kitchen table!
In his personal life, Karl and his wife are parents to a baby boy who is keeping them both busy – but in his free time Karl enjoys Scottish whisky, long distance running and Bikram yoga. He is a keen supporter of the charity Arrival Education, a mentoring scheme which pairs underprivileged children with people in the business community and also mentors UK tech entrepreneurs looking to grow their business. Karl sits on the digital advisory board for ActionAid and on the board at Findababysitter.com
